Published originally in 1795, and re-published on June 5 2011 by Ulan Press, Agnes Musgrave’s CICELY or THE ROSE OF RABY is a fictionalized biography of the life and times of Lady Cecylee Neville (1415-1495).
It is very much a period piece with swooning ladies who gasp at what life brings them. I don’t think I am being unkind by saying that this is the “heaving bosom” version of Cecylee’s life. If you enjoy 18th century novels, and are interested in how someone from the 18th century understood Cecylee’s life, this is for you. Otherwise, not so much. Three stars.

The July Buzz was so successful I’ve decided to extend it, and change some things. THWARTED QUEEN will still be offered at $2.99, a more than 70% discount from its original price of $9.99. But I have decided to discontinue the e-series THE BRIDE PRICE, ONE SEED SOWN, THE GILDED CAGE and TWO MURDERS REAPED. The reason? Because I think I am confusing my readers about my novel. And I would also like everyone to try and read Cecylee’s life in its entirety.

During that summer, Richard sets off for Pontoise to teach the French a lesson. Cecylee is left to hold court in the castle of Rouen with the wives of Richard’s generals. Nicknamed The Rose of Raby on account of her beauty, Cecylee’s life laps placidly onward during those sleepy days of high summer, when suddenly, a mysterious young man appears. She soon loses her heart to this charming stranger.
Cecylee’s private name for him is M. Beaujambs, because of his long, and very shapely legs, but history knows him as Blaybourne. Who is he? Is he an aristocrat of the House of Savoy? Or the son of a humble blacksmith? And if the latter, where did he get his exquisite manners? And his university education? And what is he doing in Rouen? By turns baffled and enchanted, Cecylee finds herself confronted by an intriguing challenge.
