Friday Poems: All Soul’s Day (November 2)

Today, November 1,  is All Saints Day. Tomorrow is All Soul’s Day, the day when we venerate the dead. In England, we have an old song from the Welsh Marches, that goes something like this:

“Soul soul for a souling cake
I pray you, missis, for a souling cake
Apple or pear, plum or cherry
Anything to make us merry …”

The photo shows a soul or souling cake, which is really a biscuit or cookie, most like shortbread which tastes of cinnamon:
